31% and counting! Let’s get more women on the bike!

Historically across cycling, participation for women is lower than men. And we’d love to see the gap continue to close.

We currently have 31% of entrants, in the 40km and 53km rides, who are female. We asked a few of them why they have entered … and hope it inspires some other women and girls to bite the bullet and sign up for 11 November and close to gender gap in cycling!

Kate, 33 years old: “I’m a full time mum, and this is a great chance to do something a bit different. I’m riding with friend, we are doing the 40km, and we’ve been out for a few practice rides. I can’t wait to try 40km in November!

Bea, in her 40s: “This is my fourth year riding in the BCCC, this time I’m trying the 53km.  I come back because last time I enjoyed the challenge, scenery and cycling with my family.  It is a lovely satisfying feeling when you have completed the challenge.  The terrific thing about the BCCC is that you can choose out of the routes you want to do depending on your fitness level and you can take your time and just enjoy the ride.  I would recommend it to anyone, such a great experience.”

Dorothy, 75 years old: “I am riding an e-bike in the 53km. This is my second Bass Coast Cycle Challenge, it’s a really fun event, that puts a smile on your face.  The 40km and 53km are great entry level rides.  I’d encourage anyone to have a go at riding the Bass Coast Cycle Challenge.”

Whether you are early days in terms of riding, a social roller or a more  experienced cyclist, the BCCC is the perfect event … our five routes are attractive to riders of all abilities. At the more challenging end we have 121km, 85km and 98km gravel  routes, which include Mt Misery. Then the 53km and 40km rides are attractive to either intermediate or recreational riders.

The relaxed, friendly nature of our community run event is also a critical factor in helping riders build the confidence they need to get on the bike over these distances.
